Hiking sticks have been around a long time and they have evolved into the incredible gadgets we know as trekking poles.
Here's a quick guide on how to use your poles properly.
1. Adjust the Length
• For flat terrain, adjust poles so your elbows for a 90 degree angle with the ground.
• For going uphill, shorten the poles slightly for better leverage.
• For downhill, lengthen the pole to maintain balance.
2. Use the correct technique
• Alternate pole placement with your opposite foot...left pole with right foot, and vice versa.
• For steep climbs, plant poles firmly to allow your upper body to help propel you upward.
• For descents, plant poles slightly ahead for added stability.
3. Optimize the Poles for Different Terrain
• Rubber tips are ideal for flat pavement, flat trails, rocky terrain, and where required by law.
• Metal tips are ideal for dirt trails, technical terrain, ascents, and descents.
• Snow basket is ideal for snow to prevent the pole from sinking.
4. Storage and Maintenance
• After each use wipe clean with a damp cloth, then allow to air dry.
• Once clean and dry, collapse and secure poles when not in use.
• Check flip clamps and tips for wear before each hike.
Using Hiking/Trekking poles correctly enhances stability, reduces strain on joints, and improves overall hiking
efficiency and enjoyment.
